Cadillac Super Cruise: What It Is & How It Works

With every automaker rushing to bring out more driver aids, including things like adaptive cruise control and lane centering, the news of much more advanced technologies might slip through the cracks. Super Cruise is one of those much more advanced technologies, and to help explain just what makes it such a huge leap forward in automotive technology, we’ve put together this guide.

Super Cruise - What Is It?

Simply put, Cuper Cruise is an advanced form of cruise control that allows you to take your hands off the wheel and let the vehicle drive itself while on compatible roads. While adaptive cruise control is able to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, an undeniably useful feature, Super Cruise operates on an entirely different level of semi-autonomous driving. Super Cruise uses a combination of real-time camera, sensors, GPS, and LiDAR precision map data to guide the vehicle. And while other systems of this type do exist, Super Cruise was recognized by MotorTrend as the best, earning the Best Tech award in 2025*. You can even pull a trailer with Super Cruise activated, a major advantage over other systems.

Super Cruise - How Does It Work?

Part of the reason why Super Cruise is so much better than competitors is that compatible roads are pre-mapped in the system, so computing power needed to deal with traffic isn’t being diverted to figuring out what sort of road you’re on. And with well over 600,000 miles worth of compatible roads in the US and Canada, it’s easy to find a road that will let you take your hands off the wheel. The first step is to activate adaptive cruise control. Once this is in operation and conditions are deemed safe, if you are on a compatible road, then a white Super Cruise icon will appear on your instrument cluster. You can now press the Super Cruise button, and when the green light bar in the steering wheel turns on, take your hands off the wheel. While it is still vitally important that you keep your eyes on the road even when your hands are off the wheel, Super Cruise does provide a much more relaxing driving experience, allowing you to enjoy long road trips without becoming exhausted behind the wheel.
